Provenance:
Carl Johann von Seidlitz (1798–1885), personal physician to Count Alexander N. Tolstoy; Thence by descent, Germany. We are grateful to Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth for her assistance in cataloguing this work. This portrait of the State Counsellor, Equerry and Cupbearer at the court of Tsar Nicholas I, Alexander N. Tolstoy (St. Petersburg 1793–1866 Nice) was possibly painted in Paris. Due to ill health, Count Tolstoy spent several sojourns in Paris between 1827–1840, accompanied by his physician, Ladurner, who himself travelled to Paris in the late 1830s. The Count’s civilian dress also indirectly suggests that this portrait was executed during a journey abroad.
