Carl Johann von Seidlitz (1798-1885), physician to Count Alexander N. Tolstoy; his heirs, Germany. The portrait of Actual Privy Councillor, Grand Master of the Stables and Grand Cup Bearer at the court of Tsar Nicholas I, Alexander N. Tolstoy (St. Petersburg 1793-1866 Nice), may have been painted in Paris. Count Tolstoy made frequent sojourns to Paris between 1827 and 1840 due to his bad health, always accompanied by his physician. Ladurner travelled to Paris in the late 1830s. The civilian dress worn by the subject also indirectly suggests that this portrait was painted during a trip abroad. We are grateful to Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth for her assistance in cataloguing this work.
