Provenance:
Private collection, Georgia; [With]Johnson Hall Fine Art, Roswell, Georgia; Acquired by the present owner from the above. Two Fishermen is a fine example of the artist's early period of the 1820s — arguably his best period. During this decade, Doughty's work transitioned from the purer topographical scenery, with nature rendered in detail, to more fanciful, imaginary scenery done in a looser hand. Two Fishermen is in the earlier, topographical tradition, but includes elements of future interests. By the early 1830s, Doughty had moved almost entirely away from these sorts of pure landscapes painted in great detail. A copy of a letter from scholar Frank H. Goodyear, Jr., discussing the present work and dated August 2, 2005, accompanies this lot.
