Charlottenborg 1847 no. 173b. Saloman studied under J. L. Lund and was influenced by the Eckersberg School known for working very carefully with the details and its realistic depiction of the motif, therefore it was obvious that Saloman soon became interested in portraiture. During a stay in Gothenburg in Sweden he accepted so many portrait commissions that he decided to stay and even later became a Swedish citizen. He painted more than 200 portraits while staying in Gothenborg. Saloman was also known for his genre- and historical paintings. The present painting has many fine details and there is a concentrated intimacy between the old teacher and the young pupil.
