acquired directly from the artist; private collection, New York Felrath Hines achieved critical recognition for his painterly abstraction of nature with two solo exhibitions at Parma Gallery in 1957 and 1959, and his inclusion in group exhibitions at the John Heller Gallery and Parma Gallery in New York in the 1950s This abstraction expressionist painting by Felrath Hines is the largest canvas by this artist to be offered at auction In 1960, the artist began painting pure abstraction and on a larger scale; another similar canvas from 1960 is in the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art He was a founding member of the Spiral Group in 1963, and had a long career as a museum painting conservator
