Edition:

Carafe by Amde Ozenfant is certainly the most emblematic masterpiece of the artist's entire oeuvre and the ultimate purist work. Painted in 1918, at the beginning of the collaboration between Amde Ozenfant and Le Corbusier, Carafe shows all the characteristics of the Purist movement, created in the same year by both artists: the simplicity of the composition, the absence of details around the subject, the choice of the subject itself, taken from everyday industrial objects, and the contrasting colour palette. The very composition of the painting brings a symbolic dimension to this exceptional work. The jug, with its simple, clear lines, is located in the middle of the canvas. It is the only figurative element in the painting. Only straight lines, horizontal, vertical and diagonal, run from the subject outwards, accentuating the depth of the composition and defining the space around the object. The contrasts between the colours delimited by the lines and the choice of the palette itself give this work an almost three-dimensional feel. The palette of deep blacks, white, ochre and green, brings a special luminosity to the central subject.
