The model depicted in this life study appears to have been a favourite of Etty's. He features in a number of studies and finished paintings, including The Warrior Arming (Manchester City Galleries)1 and The Standard Bearer (York Art Gallery).2

Condition:

Fairly good overall condition. Four princiapl areas of retocuhing/restoration: to the part in shadow of the sitter's back; top left and top right corners; and to the background either side of his left foot. On the body itself there are only very and few scattered retouchings. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale.
