Painted on the artist's preferred medium of millboard for life-room studies, this work almost certainly started as a study from a life model in the Academy, with the landscape setting added later. Typical of Ettyâ??s nude studies is the way the artist allows the extremity of a limb, in this case the womanâ??s right foot, to be cut by the edge of the support. The painting may be compared with a slightly larger Reclining female nude in landscape at York Art Gallery of circa 1830â??35.1

Condition:

Overall in good condition, the paint surface well preserved throughout. Scattered retouchings through the body but only in a concentrated way in the lwer half of her legs. Background largely unaffected. Ready to hang. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale.
