Condition:

each framed: 35½ by 25½ in.; 90.2 by 64.8 cm. The canvases are lined and are stable on their stretchers. The images read well with chiaroscuro retained and the darkness is the result of the artist's original color palette. Each canvas has a scratch or tear with resulting loss and the lining and original canvas(es) are visible through them: on the first, a vertical scratch about 4 inches long near the right edge, and a smaller vertical scratch at center about 1.5 inches long; on the second, a horizontal tear about 7 inches wide at top center. Minor surface abrasion is visible as frame abrasion on the left edge of the first canvas and a surface scratch at lower left on second canvas. Under UV: the varnish appears milky and impedes clear inspection but older retouching is faintly visible on both canvases, and a horizontal stroke at the center of the second canvas to address a surface scratch is visible. After repairing the tears, the paintings can hang in their present state. Offered in matching decoratively carved giltwood frames.
