The present lot is after an aquatint painted by Thomas Whitcombe who copied a sketch from John Christian Shetky.1 It recounts the battle between the French Navy and British Navy on February 7, 1813 off the coast of Africa at the Isles of Loss. Fought during the night, both sides experienced significant casualties and ultimately resulted with neither side claiming victory.

Markings:
The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The overall image reads well under a clear varnish. Under UV inspection, the varnish appears milky throughout with signs of possible retouching in the left edge of the composition. The painting can be hung in its current state but could benefit from being cleaned and re-varnished. Offered in a giltwood frame.
