The recent lining is taut. The paint surface is a little flattened and has sunken somewhat in the darker tones eg figure far left. UV: Scattered retouchings and strengthenings throughout, as is often the case with Italian baroque pictures. More concentrated retouching along the upper edge. Later wooden frame painted gold in fair condition.

This canvas is most likely a modello for the signed painting by Conca1 in the Chiesa di S. Matteo, Pisa, which forms part of a series of paintings of scenes from the life of the Saint, including works by Francesco Trevisani, Marco Benefial and Jacopo Zoboli.2 Concaâ??s drawing for the composition is recorded in the Gabriel Huquier sale in Paris, 9 November 1772, lot 88: â??Un Saint massacré à lâ??autel.â??
