Condition:

The canvas has been relined and is stable on its stretcher. The edge of the original canvas is visible near the lower edge. The image reads strongly beneath the varnish. It appears to be slightly dirty beneath the varnish. The canvas has been pressed in areas throughout, and there is thinness in some spots, for example, in lower right corner, in his costume at right, and towards the right of his face and hair, as also visible in the image in the printed catalogue. The canvas weave is visible in his face and upper chest. There are some scattered losses concentrated near the extreme edges. Many of the old retouched repairs are visible to the naked eye, for example near the upper center, to his laurel leaf crown in the upper left of his head, near his center chest, to the left of his left shoulder, beneath his outstretched hand, and in the lower right background, among a few others. Inspection under UV further reveals these aforementioned spots of retouched repairs, as well as a varnish that fluoresces unevenly in areas and may mask older campaigns of restoration. It also reveals a few more recent scattered spots of retouching in the figure's face, costume, and in the background. Offered in a simply carved gilt and painted frame
