Markings:
The panel is uncradled and is very slightly bowed. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There are a number of retouched losses visible to the naked eye: in the Virgins forehead and hands (including to a fine vertical scratch through the fingers of her proper right hand); in the side of Christs head; in the Virgins mantle; and in the background, most notably upper centre. The blue of the Virgins robe is also notably degraded. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the retouched losses, but since the varnish otherwise reflects fairly opaquely, it is difficult to discern further intervention. It does appear, however, that the flesh tones of both figures have been retouched, as has the Virgins blue robe. The painting is in overall fair condition.
Condition:
unframed: 46 x 31.7 cm.; 18? x 12 in.
