Condition:

Grading this salt print on a scale of 1 to 10 â?? a 10 being a print that has rich, deep dark tones and highlights that retain all of their original detail â?? this print rates a strong 9. The highlights of the soldiers' tents in both the foreground and middle ground remain bright. A boat's reflection can even be seen on the lake in the distance. This salt print is in generally excellent condition. There are tiny, dark deposits of indeterminate nature in the sky area. There is no edge fading The mount is soiled, darkened at the edges, and there is pervasive foxing that does not affect the photograph. Lithographed in the lower margin are: 'Deposé'; 'No. 277'; 'Photographed by R. Fenton. Manchester, Published by F. Agnew & Sons, Nov. 19th 1855 / London, P & D Colnaghi & Co., Paris Moulin, 23 Rue Richer. New York, Williams & Co.'; and 'Balaklava, from Guards Hill.' 'F450' is inscribed in pencil by an unidentified hand. The reverse of the mount is soiled, darkened at the edges, and foxed. It is annotated in an unidentified hand in pencil '300602.50.'
