( Dutch, 1599 - 1678 )
Portrait of a man, half-length, holding a scroll
Materials:
oil on oak panel, oval
Size Notes:
Please note, Condition 11 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers (Online Only) is not applicable to this lot.
Markings:
Oval oak panel has original bevels all round and is in excellent order. Ultra-violet light reveals subtle filling along the train of the panel, and in the interstices of the ruff, also scattered retouchings in the forehead of the man portrayed. The black of his costume has very little evidence restoration. Might perhaps benefit from a more sympathetic varnish, because the retouchings are now apparent in raking light, but is in any event ready to hang as-is in its 19the Century carved and giltwood frame
