( French, 1758 - 1823 )
Portrait of Adrienne de Canisy, Duchess of Vicence (17851876)
Materials:
Oil on canvas
Size Notes:
60 x 50 cm ; 23?? by 19 in.
Edition:
Several versions not autograph of this portrait are known, probably painted for the heirs of the model, who had several children from her two marriages. In particular, we know of one that was sold at Christie's, New York, on 4 June 2009. Its quality is mediocre, but since it comes from one of the younger branches of the family it should probably be regarded as a copy made at a time when the estate was divided, especially in the light of the present version, which remained with the Duchesse de Vicence herself until her death in 1876. It then passed to Emma de Villeneuve-Bargemont (18001881), her daughter from her first marriage to Louis Emmanuel de Canisy. The Portrait of the Duchesse de Vicence reached the current owners by direct descent from Emma.
