Condition:

The panel is slightly convex and is backed with a board covered in canvas to stabilize it in its frame. A colorful image reads well and the paint surface is relatively well preserved. Thin craquelure is visible in Mary’s skirt but is stable. 3 small points of loss are visible at St. John’s knee and one point between Jesus’ legs, though none are distracting. An inconsistency in the paint texture and coloration about 6 inches long in the area of Mary’s torso is likely an old repair. Under UV inspection, the varnish appears milky and the aforementioned area and some folds in Mary’s skirt fluoresce unevenly. A second area of restoration, also about 6 inches in length, is visible in the landscape at right. A few lines of retouching are visible in St. John’s hair.
