:~Blue Chip XII, The Collectors' Exhibition, Niagara Galleries, Melbourne, 2 March - 1 April 2010, cat. no.18.~~Wunambal artist Lily Karedada together with other members of the Kalumburu community of far north Western Australia began painting on bark and artefacts in the mid 1970s, and sold her first works through Aboriginal Traditional Arts in Perth. In 1979 canvas was introduced to the artists at Kalumburu, following a request by Aboriginal Adult Education for a large painting depicting Wandjina. West Australian artist Vaclav Macha worked with the artists to find the best way to apply the natural ochres and pigments with resin or gum on cotton duck canvas. The artists boiled red tree sap, or bush gum resin, in tins over an open fire, and then applied this 'red gum primer' in two coats to produce a suitable ground upon which to paint. This rare painting is an example of one of the artist's earliest forays into painting on canvas, typified by rich surfaces infused with boiled bush resin. ~~Throughout her long career Lily Karedada had two solo exhibitions, both of which were held at Niagara Galleries in 2000 and 2010.
