Materials:
oil on canvas
Size Notes:
Please note, Condition 11 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers (Online Only) is not applicable to this lot.
Markings:
This painting is a studio copy after the prime version by Ribera in the Museo Victor Balaguer, Barcelona.1 Nicholas Spinosa does not mention this version in his 2008 catalogue raisonné, but does acknowledge that a number of replicas exist.
Condition:
The canvas has a relatively old re-lining. The surface is secure and stable and retains a degree of its original impasto. There are some paint losses along the margins and a degree of retouching, particularly on the right-hand margin. Under ultraviolet light inspection only limited amount of retouching is evident. There is a fair amount of surface dirt on the painting and the varnish is uneven. The painting would benefit from a surface clean. Overall condition good. Held in a modern gold frame.
