Condition:
unframed: 76 x 63.7 cm.; 29? x 25? in. The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. The lining has become slightly baggy at the upper margin, and there is some evidence of bituminisation in the background around the sitter’s head; there are also lines of retouching visible to the naked eye in the craquelure of the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all of these below the milky varnish, and further reveals some small spots of retouching in the sitter’s hand, cuff, collar and buttons of his jacket. The painting is in overall fair condition.
