Private collection, Italy, The Ponte dei Pugni [Bridge of Fists] is named after an ancient tradition that took place on a bridge in Venice: the War of the Fists. The residents of two opposing factions, the Castellani of San Pietro di Castello and the Nicolotti of San Nicola di Mendicoli, from September to Christmas challenged each other with ‘blows of fists’ in the middle of the bridge and the tradition was for the winner to throw his opponent into the canal. These fist fights were outlawed in 1705 because of their extreme violence
