Markings:
signed and dated lower left: peint par JM Combette / en 1814
Condition:
The canvas is unlined and paint layer remains stable under a thick and clear varnish. There is a very light craqueleure pattern that is not bothersome. The colors are vibrant and overall the painting presents very well. Under ultraviolet light some scattered retouchings are visible; the few larger ones (maximum 2-inches diameter) are all in the dark background: in the upper left corner and along the bottom of the painting. The other retouchings are minimal, strengthening some shadowed areas such as to the left of the easel and just outside the left edge of the sitter's skirt underneath the easel. There has been some very minimal and subtle inpainting to address the craqueleure in the woman's face; this is not visible to the naked eye. The painting can hang as is and is offered in a carved giltwood frame. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale.
