												Provenance:

William Percival Boxall, Bellvue Hall, Brighton Collection of Lady Ruth Fermoy, grandmother of Diana, Princess of Wales By descent in Lady Fermoy's family to the present owner Private collection, New York Exhibited: London, Knoedler's, Exhibition of English Masters, 1911, no. 5 The attribution to John Opie is traditional in Lady Fermoy's family. The purported sitter, Anna Seward (1742-1809), a poet known as "The Swan of Lichfield," was a relative of hers. A very similar portrait of the same sitter now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (06.1242) is attributed to John Hoppner.
