Prior to relining dated and inscribed to Wm. J. Burns Esq. My savior in New Orleans - J. Neagle 1824
Condition:
In an antique giltwood frame. In overall very good professionally restored condition. Abrading along left and lower edges. Stretcher marks along all four edges. Scattered faint craquelure with some alligatoring at upper right. Painting has been relined and relining is partially visible at upper left. Scattered inpainting in background which appears to be mainly filler or strengthening of edges. Old horizontal repair at lower center in jacket and one slightly above and to the left. Difficult for UV light to completely penetrate varnish layer. Face reveals no apparent signs of any major inpainting. Slight surface soiling.
