LOT DETAILS

Materials:

oil on canvas

Size Notes:

unframed: 43.4 x 53.5 cm.; 17? x 21 in. The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: J N Sartorious A black horse and Dalmation dog in a landscape Oil on canvas, in a modern wood veneered frame in good condition. The painting has been lined. The paint layer, when viewed in raking light, is raised and unstable with minor recent flaked paint loss can be detected across the surface. Previous minor paint loss, visible to the sky in particular, has been restored out. The paint layer is, generally, in a good original state. A filigree of minor pale shrinkage cracks is visible to the horse, along with some thinning of the black paint; the whole is overlaid with the remains of an old opaque and discoloured varnish. Chromatic and tonal nuances remain within the composition and would be enhanced with the removal of the discoloured varnish. Fine detail to the trees in the background, through the animals and in to the foreground are well maintained.
