Provenance:
sale, Christie’s, London, 5 July 1991, lot 345;, with Richard Green, London, An almost exact contemporary to Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jacob Grimmer was an important sixteenth-century landscape painter. In 1539 he was registered in the Liggeren of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as a student of the unknown Gabriel Bouwens but according to Karel van Mander he learned from Matthys Cock and later from Christian van den Queborn. Dated examples of his work range from between 1546 and 1589. Jacob Grimmer was at the head of a well-organised workshop. After his death his son Abel took over the studio., ,The present landscape is a good example of Jacob Grimmer’s late rural works. It is stylistically closely related to a signed pair which are today in the Museo Civico in Cremona (see Reine de Bertier de Sauvigny, Catalogue Raisonné, Brussels 1991, cat. no. XLV). A date during the 1580s is feasible for the present work., We are grateful to Luuk Pijl for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs
