It is comparable to another work by Isaac van Ostade from 1641 in a German private collection (see W. Bernt, vol. II, Munich 1969, no. 892), and to a painting by the artist in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow (1640–44). The present painting once bore a false signature for Adriaen van Ostade
