LOT DETAILS

Materials:

oil on canvas, laid down on panel

Size Notes:

panel: 25 by 19 in.; 63.5 by 48.3 cm.

Edition:

This portrait is a derivation of Holbeins portrait mural of King Henry VIII at Whitehall Palace, London, which was destroyed in 1698 and recorded only in two reduced copies by Remigius van Leemput.1 Painted on an unstretched close-weave cloth (probably linen or hemp), this work is perhaps a "painted cloth" portrait of the King produced as a wall-hanging for domestic display. Although overpainted in parts, much of the paint surface appears to date to the 16th century.

Description:

or LOG IN

Markings:

inscribed and dated at the upper left: t 53/1545

Condition:

The support is a thin-weave canvas laid down on a panel that consists of 2 planks joined vertically and which is cradled on the reverse. The canvas is mostly flat on the panel with a few areas of minor folding or bubbling that are not distracting. The portrait reads well beneath the varnish. The panel join is visible down the center of the sitter. To the naked eye, underdrawing is faintly visible on the right side of the collar. Under UV inspection, the varnish fluoresces unevenly, but retouching appears to be present in the lower left area of his chest, and some minor retouching on his hat. Very little if any retouching is visible in the face. Offered in a decoratively carved elaborate wooden frame with chips and losses to the paint.
