Markings:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. There is a degree of wear visible, particularly in the darker areas of the painting. Inspection under ultraviolet light appears to reveal two campaigns of restoration: one consisting of broader areas of retouching to parts of the saint's habit and the background, which fluoresces lightly; the other consisting of fine, scattered spot retouchings scattered throughout to reduce the appearance of craquelure, which fluoresces darkly. There is also retouching along all four margins of the picture. These have all been sensitively executed and the painting presents well in its current state without a need for any further intervention.
