Markings:
The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. There are a handful of scattered surface scuff marks. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an extensive campaign of small lines and dots of retouching throughout the background and the figures. There is a vertical line of retouching running the height of the canvas, 20 cm. from the left margin, possibly to an old fold or seam. Despite the extent of retouching, the painting presents well in its current state and is ready to hang.
