Kunsthaus Lempertz, 4.12.2011, lot 775, Private Collection, Germany - acquired at the above auction, we are grateful to the Estate of Gotthard Graubner for the kind assistance., As Graubner himself said, 1963 was a critical year for his artistic development: he really tackled the relationship between colour and space head-on. Colour and light breathe within a body., The first cushion pictures were made. As in the present work, Graubner experimented with colour-soaked paper, which he hoisted onto a canvas. They are the forerunners of his subsequent colour-space bodies which he made from 1970 onwards. G.Z
