LOT DETAILS

Materials:

a pair, both oil on panel

Size Notes:

Throughout his career, Gerrit van Vucht was well-known as an accomplished still life painter. In 1666 he was elected as a member of the Guild in Schiedam, later becoming one of its masters in 1675.

Edition:

Vucht's still lives often show an affinity, in terms of both colour and composition, with those of Harmen and Pieter van Steenwijck: brothers active in Delft and Leiden. For instance, as in the present pair of paintings, Vucht's pictures usually incorporate yellowish-brown, neutral tones, with backgrounds being painted in variations of light grey.

Markings:

A STILL LIFE WITH SMOKING ATTRIBUTES SUCH AS PIPES AND A BURNER; AND A STILL LIFE WITH A WINE GLASS AND SLICED HERRING ON A PLATE

Condition:

Both panels are uncradled, flat and stable. There are small, vertical dashes of discoloured retouching scattered in the background of both along the woodgrain. There is a very slight degree of wear in the darker pigments of both tables. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals more concentrated areas of retouching in the tables of both panels. The still life elements in both are better preserved and only scattered in pinprick retouchings, save for some retouching in the bottom of the tall glass in the latter. None of these impede from the legibility of the images, which are ready to hang in their current state. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale.
