LOT DETAILS

Materials:

oil on mahogany panel

Measurements:

20.28 in. (51.50 cm.) (height) by 29.02 in. (73.70 cm.) (width)

Condition:

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: Structural Support The artist's panel has an even profile and appears to be structurally sound and secure. There is a repaired panel join running horizontally across the width of the panel, approximately 16 cm below the upper horizontal framing edge. Paint Surface The paint surface has a rather uneven and glossy varnish layer and the overall appearance could be improved with a more sympathetic surface coating. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows retouchings along the horizontal panel join, a number of scattered retouchings in the sky and foreground and quite extensive retouchings on the horse, the majority of which are small horizontal brush strokes appearing to cover panel grain. There are scattered retouchings in the foreground. There may be other retouchings which are not easily identifiable under ultraviolet light. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in reasonably good and stable condition and the only work that might be required is revarnishing. "This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
