Condition:

framed: 14 1/2 by 16 1/2 in.; 36.8 by 41.9 cm. The canvas has a very coarse weave and is unlined and stable on its stretcher. The image reads fairly well beneath old varnish despite the dark color palette. Other than a small spot of frame abrasion on the right edge, no retouching or repairs are visible to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, retouching is concentrated on the right half of the composition, throughout the hind legs of the horse and the head of the cow and in shadowy areas surrounding both animals, but all retouching has been well applied. Offered in a thin, simple gilt frame.
