unframed: 41.2 x 29.9 cm.; 16¼ x 11¾ in. The panel is uncradled and very slightly bowed. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. Numerous discoloured retouchings are visible throughout, including to old areas of loss in the dark background, and there are small losses in the Child's shoulder, the top of the Virgin's hair, and in the parapet by her hand. The paint surface is tenting in some areas - to a vertical split running from the centre of the lower margin, approx. 7cm. long; through the right-hand side of the Virgin's halo and down through the Child's face; and along the upper margin. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the opaque varnish, but it confirms the aforementioned retouchings, which are more easily visible with the naked eye. The painting is in overall moderate condition. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale.
