Condition:

framed: 27½ by 23¾ in.; 70 by 60.5 cm The following condition report is kindly provided by Simon Parkes. This work on a single piece of mahogany is in good condition. The panel is flat and shows no splits or areas of instability. No retouches are visible in the dress, shoulders or neck when the work is examined under ultraviolet light, except for possibly a few small spots in the shadow beneath the jaw. There is an area of retouching in the cheek, which addresses what is probably an area of weakness. There may be an area of retouching in the chin. Beneath the eye, in a couple of spots in the lips, and beneath the nose there are small spots of what appears to be restoration. The original paint layer reads strongly in some areas when viewed under ultraviolet light. The very dark colors in the ringlets of the hair on the neck, on either side of the ear, and above the forehead appear very dark under ultraviolet light, and while these areas may be restored, they also could be original to the artist. The work requires no further restoration and should be hung as is.
