In his later career he became well known internationally for his monumental public sculptures, their heavy, solid volumes reminiscent of architecture. La Poupée, however, dates from a period when his work was more human both in its scale and its form. Its sheen is mesmerising, its surface unyielding, and yet its smoothness and those soft curves and mounds are enticingly tactile. La Poupée pulls together disparate elements to create an unexpectedly gratifying whole; but as Emile Gilioli's own life demonstrates, it is sometimes the most unusual combinations which produce the most rewarding results
