:~David Tovey Pioneers of St. Ives Art at Home and Abroad, Tewkesbury, 2008 - see pp. 65-68 -~'The Summer Exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery, which brought together for the first time in London a group of work by the pricipal Cornish painters, was soon followed by an exhibition solely devoted to Cornish art and was held in December 1890 at the galleries of the London art dealer William Dowdswell, the man who had promoted Whistler's show in 1884.~The list of exhibitors included Edward Docker, who is normally associated with the Newlyn colony, but was also a founder member of the St. Ives Arts Club. Docker, who lodged with Mrs. Hosking at Trenwith House, contributed 'En Famille' (our picture, price £32), which was later described as a charming work - his best to date - and gave promise as an animal painter (Cornish Telegraph, 26th March 1891).~~We are grateful to David Tovey for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
