Paysanne (a Double-sided Work)
Charcoal and black crayon on paper
24.50 by 18.75 in.
Signed with the initials C.P.(toward lower right), signed with the initialsC.P.(on theverso)
Executed on cream laid paper. The sheet is mounted to a window mat so that both sides are visible. All four edges are deckled. There is a tear across the lower right corner of the sheet. An additional tear measuring one inch in length to the right edge. There is a uniform mat stain to all four edges, likely the result of an acidic mount. There are some scattered spots of foxing throughout. Some minor studio staining to the background of the composition. The medium is well preserved. According to Joachim Pissarro, the expert for Pissarro works on paper, the work has been retouched by another hand in some locations. This work is in good condition. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
Dr. Joachim Pissarro can confirm that this work will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné of Drawings by Camille Pissarro.
