It has not been possible to see the work entirely unframed. The canvas is not lined. Examination under UV light reveals small lines and dots of retouching in areas, notably to the man's torso, shoulders, hands and knee, to the woman's hip, stomach and inner thigh, towards the upper left corner and along the extreme edges. There is a dot of paint loss to the left part of the upper edge (approx. 17 cm from the left edge) and a few smaller scattered paint losses. There are some small areas of stable craquelure, most predominately to the upper part of the left edge. There is a superficial scratch (approx. 8 cm long) running horizontally from the centre of the left edge and a few smaller surface scratches in places. There is some frame rubbing along the extreme edges. This work is in overall good condition.
