( Flemish, Circle of 1599 - 1641 )
Portrait of Charles II, while Prince of Wales, full-length, in an equestrian costume and holding a feathered hat, standing before a balustrade
Materials:
oil on canvas
Size Notes:
canvas: 58¼ by 37 in.; 148 by 94 cm.
Description:
SIGN UP or LOG IN
Condition:
framed: 66½ by 45 in.; 169 by 114.3 cm. The canvas is wax lined and is taut and stable on its stretcher. The image reads very well beneath the varnish with highlights and shading retained. Some areas of the sky have darkened, which could be older varnish or discolored retouching. Under UV inspection, repairs are visible as a thin vertical tear through his proper left sleeve, the area below his legs, on the lower left of the balustrade and a repair in the background at left. Retouching is concentrated in these areas and on his proper left cheek and at the bottom of his hair. Other smaller areas of retouching are scattered throughout, but none are distracting to the naked eye. The painting can hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame with nameplate reading "DANIEL MYTENS/ A PRINCE OF ORANGE."
