Sale, Ader, Tajan, Paris, 1 July 1994, lot 152;, Belgian nobility, Alexander Roslin, who came from Sweden, was one of the leading portraitists of the 18th century. A virtuoso when it came to the rendering of textures and a sensitive psychologist, he was highly successful throughout Europe. He settled in Paris in 1752 and was admitted as a member to the Académie the following year. Travels to Saint Petersburg, Warsaw, and Vienna contributed to his fame, which spread across Europe.
