Tola Wewe was born in Okitipupa Ondo State, Nigeria in 1959. A graduate of the University of Ife, with a masters degree in Visual arts from the University of Ibandan, Nigeria, Wewe specialised in painting. His work is known for its originality, simplicity, surface texture and inviting colours. Tola Wewe is a founding member of ONA group, that is committed to the continuance of excellence in the creative arts and his creations originate from the Ona symbols of the Yoruba which invoke the native themes of traditional lores and myths of the Yoruba. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Nigeria and abroad; a prolific painter, widely considered as one of the best contemporary artist of his generation Described as one of the most talented minds from the African continent, Tola Wewe’s works are widely acclaimed for their originality, simplicity, surface texture and mastery of colours. After graduating from the Universities of Ife and Ibadan, he became a founding member of the Ona movement. His style draws from the Ona symbols of the Yoruba culture and his themes project traditional lores and myths of his native culture. Beyond Nigeria, Tola Wewe's works has been exhibited across the world including Coningsby Gallery, London, Espace Alberica Gallery, Paris to mention a few.
