Raymond Prohaska

(American , b. 1901 - 1981 )

Born in Muo, Yugoslavia in Montenegro on the Adriatic Coast, February 5, 1901. He was a painter, illustrator, graphic artist, and photographer. Emigrated to US in 1908. His name was changed from Gratia Josef Prohaska to Raymond Joseph Prohaska at the suggestion of a school teacher. He became an American citizen. President of the Society of Illustrators, NYC, 1959-61. Studied at the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco, Ca. Art director in Chicago and New York for several years before becoming a successful illustrator for major magazines including, Delineator, American Magazine, Ladies Home Journal, McCalls, Colliers, Redbook, Good Housekeeping, and The Saturday Evening Post. Author of A Basic Course in Design, Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1972. Artist-in-residence: Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va. 1963-69. Artist-in-residence: Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC 1969-74.
