North Carolina is home to artist Phillip Philbeck. From his earliest years as a child, Philbeck has always painted. Born in Washington D.C. in 1968, he has spent most of his life in the state that has inspired so many of his paintings. Growing up, the artist drew and painted whenever he could. With a heritage of an artistic and creative family, Philbeck's father, who also painted, encouraged his son and nurtured the budding artist's talents. Although basically self-taught, young Philbeck attended college where he was mentored by instructors who saw a passion and talent that they encouraged the artist to pursue. At the age of only 24, Philbeck began publishing limited edition prints, with many releases having sold out. Early in his career, his works focused on the rural landscapes that surrounded his western NC home. Gradually, feeling the need to express himself on a larger scale, he shifted his attention to more grand, dramatic views of the Appalachian mountains and coast. This whetted his appetite for even grander scenes to include in his repertoire. Landscapes of the American West, with the soaring peaks of the Tetons and Rocky Mountains have been as much subject matter as his eastern views in the past few years to present.
