Mabel Dearmer

(British , b. 1872 - 1915 )

Born in 1872, Mabel White trained as an artist before marrying Percy Dearmer, a handsome clergyman, at the age of twenty. She was an energetic attractive woman with “a crown of red-gold hair” who shared with her husband, beliefs in Christianity, socialism and feminism as well as interests in the arts and the theatre. Mabel was a playwright, illustrator of posters who also wrote and illustrated books for children, and was a well known figure in literary and political circles and within the aestheticism movement. She was a woman who responded to a cause with conviction and commitment. When her husband volunteered to travel as chaplain to Serbia with Mrs Stobart’s hospital unit, Mabel decided, on impulse to join him. Unfortunately, despite being inoculated against typhoid, she succumbed to the illness. For three weeks her condition waxed and waned. In early July 1915, her condition deteriorated...on July 11th, 1915, Mrs Stobart notes that “Mrs Dearmer— mother, wife, poet, artist, dramatist, and last, but not least, camp orderly—was dead.”
