she moved to Baker Lake in 1958 to give birth to one of her children; she was raised on the land by her grandparents in the traditional Inuit style; produced drawings, prints and was also noted for her wallhangings In 1999 Tiktaalaaq was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree by the University of Guelph. Having never attended school, she was proud that her art was being recognized.
