Francoise Oklaga became an artist later in life having spent the first portion of it living out on the land. She was born in Coral Harbour and is the sister to Cape Dorset artist Pudlo Pudlat. Oklaga, however, was adopted to a family in Chesterfield Inlet. She married a man from Baker Lake and in 1975 they moved there permanently to be closer to his family. This move was the start of her artistic career, which lasted only fifteen years as she was in her fifties when it began. During this short time Oklaga created vibrant, dynamic drawings that communicate a unique energy.
