Dana Zamecnikova worked as a stage designer for the Prague National Theatre before she turned to glass sculpture. While developing as a glass artist, Zamecnikova never lost touch with her roots in the theatre and the influence is evident in her work. In layered constructions of painted plate glass and collage, she creates an illusion of depth in which a narrative unfolds within her lush, visually complex images. From images of animals, historical figures and masked actors that suggest stories about the lives of performers, to haunting silhouettes of women in distress, Zamecnikova's figures appear to enact dramas on the stage of her glass assemblages. It's the world as a "circus of humanity. The figures and symbols are as diverse as the world's people and cultures, and they represent the absurd differences between us. Her work often seems like fragments of memories: distorted, translucent, ever-changing.
