American painter Christian Spruell (b. 1970) is a Los-Angeles based artist. His career began in the mid 1990's, while still a student at the San Francisco Art Institute. After receiving a scholarship to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, his career quickly blossomed. After alternating workspace studios between Brooklyn and San Francisco, he eventually settled in New York full time in 1997. In 2002, Spruell returned home to Los Angeles and now lives and works in Los Angeles County. His work is in various corporate and private collections throughout the United States. Although his subject matter is always changing, Spruell continues to apply paint with an enormous variety of physicality. His work is in some ways about the overwhelming presence of the paint pigment and form, thus lending itself to work in alliance with the architecture of the environments where installed. It is immediately evident when approaching his work to what degree the limits of contrast can be pushed.
